Geocache Description:

Series Overview

Brukunga's history is rooted in its indigenous significance as a "place of fire stone" and a sacred site for the Kaurna and Peramangk people.  The location was developed as the Nairne Pyrite Mine from 1955–1972, which supplied pyrite for superphosphate production. After the mine closed, the site became a major source of environmental concern due to acid mine drainage and the South Australian Government took responsibility in 1977, eventually establishing a water treatment plant. Whether you’re passing through or exploring more of the Hills, Brukunga offers a peaceful backdrop for a geocaching adventure.

This cache is part of a series designed to celebrate the unique challenge of pole caching and tree fishing. Each hide in the series is positioned around 7 metres up in the branches of gum trees, waiting for those who come prepared. You will be able to easily reach all the hides using a 7-metre pole, along with a steady hand and a bit of patience. These hides are intended to be fun, a little different, and a great way to test your caching skills.

Take care when retrieving the cache and always respect the natural environment around you – the gum trees are part of what makes this area so special. Bring your pole, your sense of adventure, and maybe a caching buddy or two, and enjoy the challenge of this elevated hide in the Adelaide Hills.
