Geocache Description:

3llabeth came to visit me for the week for some caching and a girls’ trip in the Adirondack Mountains! Later, our dear friend Bear621 would join us, but first we set off to explore. And, well… judging by the name of this cache, you can guess how it turned out.

The day started bright and early with a few caches along Route 3, the trees showing off their almost-peak fall colors. Then I made the mistake of saying, “Why don’t we go to the top of Whiteface?” Famous last words.

At the summit, the battery light flicked on, clouds rolled in, and the whole place took on an eerie feel. We shrugged it off—surely everything would be fine. Up the stairs we went, the dog bounding happily from rock to rock. The top was cold and fogged in, with no view at all (a warning sign we should have taken more seriously). After the typical tourist wandering, we headed back down the elevator and tunnel, relieved to see the car waiting. But when we tried to start George—nothing.

By some miracle and a little tinkering, George coughed back to life! We were saved… or so we thought. Ten minutes down the mountain, chaos began. Random warning lights lit up, the windows refused to roll down, the heat quit, and finally even the radio died. Still, the car kept moving, so I aimed for Lake Placid and the promise of cell service. But George had other plans. Locked in first gear, he gave up right after the toll booth.

Luckily, there was a pull-off just ahead, with Red Pond stretching out in full autumn glory—shades of red, gold, and orange dancing on the water. George, on the other hand, stood lifeless. Alternator dead, no service, and just two girls with a dog stranded under the wide Adirondack sky.

So, with nothing else to do while waiting for the tow truck, we decided to make the best of it—by hiding a cache!

Enjoy the views and the peaceful pond, but watch your step crossing the dam—it can be slippery. Cache is a small bison tube. Happy caching!
