The Civil War hit home in Madison County, Kentucky. The Battle of Richmond was fought on August 29th and 30th in 1862. This war pitted experienced Confederate soldiers under Major General Edmund Kirby Smith against raw, inexperienced recruits under Union Major General William “Bull” Nelson, resulting in an overwhelmingly Confederate victory. Beliefs and divisions affected families as they became at odds with each other over who they supported. Individuals took sides as they fought for either the Union Army of the North, or the Confederate Army of the South. Countless lives were lost on the very ground where you now stand, as this is the site of an intense Civil War battle. You are walking on hallowed ground (there are over 2.5 miles of paved trails), where men lost their lives fighting in support of their values and beliefs, whichever side they were on. The home on this property is called the Pleasant View home. It was built in 1824 and served as a hospital after the battle to care for those wounded and dying as a result of the war.
