Geocache Description:

A Jigidi…for KERGUNYAH

One in a series of caches to highlight the many towns, villages, hamlets, localities and crossroads around Victoria. (Based on a series of caches in South Australia, started by local SA cacher adelaideram)

NOTE : the cache IS NOT at the posted co-ordinates. Solve the jigidi below.

Kergunyah is a delightful small town in the Kiewa Valley in NE Victoria 10km south of Kiewa and 23 km north of Dederang. At the 2016 census Kergunyah had a population of 215. It is farming country that developed from a large pastoral run in in 1838 into a small community. It has a Caravan Park, Uniting Church, General Store and Post Office, Pony Club, Young Farmer Club, C.W.A. Card Club and Fire Brigade. Kergunyah’s school was closed in 1953 when Kiewa Consolidated was opened.

The Kergunyah Streamside Reserve is a popular swimming area on a bend in the Kiewa River and an active local Landcare Group attached to the Kiewa Wetlands maintains the area. This group covers the areas around the farming community of Kergunyah in the Kiewa River catchment, and is a sub group of the Kiewa Catchment Landcare Groups Inc.

According to Sandy Wallace 2015, early settlers have found stone axes, grinding stones and other artefacts that reflect indigenous use of the area. “Long ago there were signs of aboriginals camps, but these are now all ploughed up”
