🪨 TIFFIN FOSSIL HUNT 🪨
This old church was built with four different types of rocks. Limestone, sandstone, granite and slate(roof). The geology is amazing in this beautiful piece of architecture. Let's take a closer look!
Local Geology:
Local to Tiffin, Ohio, are primarily sedimentary rocks, including limestone, dolomite, shale, and sandstone, deposited during the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian periods. These rocks are found in nearby quarries within the Findlay Arch Mineral District, which is also known for producing calcite, celestite, and fluorite.
Rock types
• Limestone and dolomite: These are common rocks in northwestern Ohio, used for crushed stone and building materials.
• Shale and siltstone: These fine-grained rocks are prevalent in the state's geologic history and are often found alongside sandstone formations.
• Sandstone: This is another common rock in Ohio, used for dimension stone and construction.
Limestone
Limestone is a type of carbonate sedimentary rock which is the main source of the material lime. It is composed mostly of the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate CaCO3. Limestone forms when these minerals precipitate out of water containing dissolved calcium. This can take place through both biological and nonbiological processes, though biological processes, such as the accumulation of corals and shells in the sea, have likely been more important for the last 540 million years. Limestone often contains fossils which provide scientists with information on ancient environments and on the evolution of life.

Questions:
To log this cache, attach required photo(s) to your log entry and message me, the answers to the following questions:
1. Could this limestone have came from a local quarry? Is limestone part of the local geology? (Located in the Lesson)
2. Task: Find a fossil. Identify the fossil by Type & Name (Ex: Trilobites & Trimerus)
Include a photo with your log.
3. Using the chart photo above:
How many fossils were you able to locate? (Tip: Use 3-4 blocks of the church foundation)
4. Post a picture of yourself or a personal item with the church in the background (REQUIRED).
