Dabartinėje Žvėryno teritorijoje nuo seno buvo pušynas, iki XIX a. vidurio priklausęs LDK didikams Radviloms. Jie čia buvo įkūrę medine tvora aptvertą medžioklės rezervatą, iš to kilęs vietovės pavadinimas. XVI a. buvo iškasti du tvenkiniai, kuriuos pildė kalvose esančių šaltinių vandenys, o tvenkinių vanduo tekėdamas į Nerį suko malūną. Nuo XVI a. iki XX a. vidurio žmonės iš Karoliniškių, Viršuliškių ir kitų aplinkinių kaimų akmenimis grįstu keliu veždavo į malūną malti grūdus. Dabar tai modernus gyvenamasis namas, kurio išvaizda primena buvusį malūną (kitoje Latvių g. pusėje). XVIII a. vietovės dalis buvo paversta parku - su takais, retais medžiais ir gėlynais. In the current territory of Žvėrynas, there has long been a pine forest that, until the mid-19th century, belonged to Radvilas, magnates of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. They established a hunting reserve here, enclosed by a wooden fence, from which the area's name originates. In the 16th century, two ponds were dug, filled with water from springs in the hills, and the water from these ponds flowed into the Neris River, powering a mill. From the 16th century until the mid-20th century, people from Karoliniškės, Viršuliškės, and other surrounding villages used a stone-paved road to bring grain to the mill for grinding. Today, it is a modern residential building whose appearance recalls the former mill (on the other side of Latvių Street). In the 18th century, part of the area was transformed into a park, with pathways, rare trees, and flowers. Find the exotic fruit on the island in the Žvėrynas Park pond.
