Geocache Description:

This is a “ … where no cache has gone before …” Geocache.  Read the intro for GCB8X5V to see an explanation.

First thing to say here is that there HAS been a cache on this bridge in the not too distant past. However that one was placed on the far side of the bridge (Woodbine). So although on the same structure, the two cache locations are in different suburbs.

Second, re Parking. In theory, Fullwood Pl would be the natural spot to park. However, at the time of placement, a significant amount of new home construction is about to commence … Fullwood Pl has temporary fencing erected along both sides. While the bridge is currently accessible from the end of Fullwood Pl, I don’t know whether this access and parking will be interrupted. For the present why not access GZ from the Woodbine side? (see ‘Waypoint’) I found crossing the motorway using the bridge to be an enjoyably different walk to a cache.

The Bridge was named after 19-month-old Skye Sassine, who died on New Year's Eve 2009, when a driver who caused a high-speed police chase crashed into the Sassine family car on the M5 at Ingleburn. The man had committed a string of armed robberies, where he stole cash, laptops, gift vouchers and wallets. It was noted that during the chase the driver, who was unlicensed, reached speeds of up to 160km per hour in a 70kmph zone and crossed to the wrong side of the road more than once, causing other drivers to take evasive action. In heavy traffic the driver ran red lights, drove on median strips and was drug-affected and talking on a mobile phone. He received a minimum sentence of 14 years in gaol, with an upper limit of 19 years.

The police drivers involved did not escape criticism, but charges were not laid, and the Sassine family stated that they did not hold them responsible for the death of their daughter.

The tragedy led premier at the time, Kristina Keneally, to introduce new penalties for drivers who deliberately try to avoid arrest by starting high-speed police chases. The legislation formulated became known as “Skye’s Law”. The pedestrian bridge between Claymore and Woodbine was officially opened in 2010, bearing the toddler’s name.

Is there no holding him back? Another Hillster FTF.  Legend.
