Let's get together for a quick tour of the geologic and biologic wonders of Bama Rock Garden. We'll be led by a professional geologist and paleobotanist who will point out interesting facts about the rock outcrops in this area. The trail is about 2/3 of a mile and could include some optional bouldering. The hike usually takes from a hour to an hour and a half of slowish walking.
The area was made into a family-owned roadside attraction in the 1940’s. Visitors could pay to explore the rock wonders or swim in the pond. It was a popular place for picnics and school field trips. Not much information about this area can be found online, but locals all seem to have childhood memories of it. When Interstate 20/59 was built, easy access was lost, and the attraction was forced to close.
Please use the final coordinates for directions – Google Maps for BRG will take you to the wrong spot. You CANNOT access BRG from the interstate – only from Hwy 11. After turning off Hwy 11, about 2.5 miles up Bama Rock Garden Rd., you’ll see two, two story brick houses on your right. The gravel road to BRG is on your left about 50 yards past these houses. Drive up the gravel road and find a place to park.
Wear good walking shoes. There is a paved path, but it is often broken up or missing. It might be cool in the morning, but will warm up – especially on top of the sandstone – dress in layers. Bringing water, a hat, insect repellant, a walking stick, and a camera might make the short hike more pleasant.
Please be on time if you are coming. After we start the hike, it might be difficult to find us. Also, as there are no "facilities" you might consider a stop just after you get off the interstate, however, there are A LOT of rocks and trees.
If enough people (any people) are interested, we might go to Sadie's Diner for lunch afterwards.
