🦢 The Black Swans of Dawlish
By Devon’s shore, where sea winds sigh,
A river whispers, soft and shy—
And gliding through its mirrored gleam,
Black swans drift by, like fragments of dream.
Once far from home, in Austral skies,
They spread dark wings where sunlight lies;
Till one who left, with heart still true,
Brought Dawlish grace in feathered hue.
In nineteen-six, two swans arrived,
A gift of love, a town revived;
But war swept through, and silence fell,
The Brook forgot their gentle spell.
Then peace returned, and kindness too—
From distant lands their kin flew through;
A warden’s gift, by fate’s design,
Restored the town’s unbroken line.
Now Dawlish keeps, by flowing stream,
Its living emblem, soft as dream;
Black swans that glide through morning’s light,
Dark stars against the day and night.
