📍 Perché questa piazza
Questa piazza un tempo si chiamava “Chianu ra Statua” (Piano della Statua) perché al centro sorge una colonna romana sormontata dalla statua di Sant'Agata, in memoria del miracolo che salvò la città dalla peste nel 1743.
Nel 1837 qui furono fucilati otto rivoluzionari insorti contro il regime borbonico: per questo oggi la piazza è dedicata ai “martiri per la libertà”.
Situata lungo l’asse di Via Vittorio Emanuele II, vicino al mare, è il punto di arrivo di una delle storiche vie della città.
Recentemente la piazza è stata riqualificata, con nuovi spazi verdi, percorsi accessibili e un arredo urbano più moderno. Welcome to Catania and… welcome to your new adventure!

📍 Why this square
This square was once called “Chianu ra Statua” (“Square of the Statue”) because at its center stands a Roman column topped with a statue of Saint Agatha, in memory of the miracle that saved the city from the plague in 1743.
In 1837, eight revolutionaries who rose up against the Bourbon regime were executed here; for this reason, the square is now dedicated to the “martyrs for freedom.”
Located along Via Vittorio Emanuele II, close to the sea, it marks the endpoint of one of the city’s historic streets.
Recently, the square has been redeveloped with new green areas, accessible walkways, and a more modern urban design.
