Mami Wata is a prominent water spirit in African and Afro-Caribbean mythology, with origins tracing back to ancient legends among the Igbo ethnic group in West Africa. Often depicted as a mesmerizing figure with the upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish or snake, Mami Wata embodies duality—serving as both a symbol of fortune and a potential harbinger of misfortune.
