Colapesce, meaning "Nicholas the Fish," is an Italian mythological figure from Sicilian folklore about a boy named Nicola who loved the sea so much he became half-fish, half-man. In the most famous version of his legend, he sacrifices himself by swimming to the bottom of the sea to hold up the island of Sicily on his shoulders, an act that has supposedly kept it from sinking.
