The Olmsted Brothers were awarded the contract to design this park, which was named after William H. Seward, Secretary of State under President Andrew Johnson, who arranged for the purchase of Alaska in 1867. The plan, prepared in 1912, laid out the general concepts for the park that exists today: a mix of shoreline, meadows, picnic areas, and playfields, ringing what Olmsted called the "Magnificent Forest."
