Geocache Description:

Village Sign, Marston

The village is heavily linked to the Thorold family with the village school and public house carrying the name. There are several memorials inside St Mary's to various members of the Thorold family.

The family first came to Marston through the marriage of Sir Richard Thorold with the heiress of the de Marston family in the middle of the fourteenth century, in the middle of the fourteenth century.

The Thorold Baronetcy, of Marston in the County of Lincoln, was created in the Baronetage of England on 24 August 1642 for William Thorold. He fought as a Royalist in the Civil War and represented Grantham in the House of Commons after the Restoration.

The baronetcy has been considered dormant since 1999 and is not currently listed on the Official Roll of the Baronetage.

The village currently has a primary school, a pub, a church, a hotel and various listed buildings.

About Village Sign Caches

This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).

The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!

More information, bookmarks and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do.
I would ask that you request a number for your cache first at www.villagesignseries.co.uk
so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
