🌊 Canals and Lakebed Formation / Formación de los Canales y del Lecho Lacustre

The canals of Xochimilco lie on top of an ancient volcanic basin. Over thousands of years, volcanic ash, clay sediments, and mineral-rich material accumulated, creating a flat and water-retentive lakebed. When the larger lakes of the valley were drained during colonial times, Xochimilco’s canals remained as one of the only areas where the original hydrology can still be observed.
Today, the water depth, movement, and the type of sediment visible along the banks provide clues about the geology beneath your feet.

Durante miles de años se acumularon cenizas volcánicas, sedimentos arcillosos y materiales ricos en minerales, formando un fondo lacustre plano y capaz de retener agua. Chinampas are artificial islands built on the soft lakebed. Their construction relied heavily on geological materials: clay-rich mud, organic sediment, reeds, and lake soil. These layers were piled into rectangular plots, forming stable platforms supported by the high water-retention properties of the lakebed.
The chinampas around Michmani demonstrate how soil type, sediment layers, and the hydrological conditions of the canal system make this method possible.

Las chinampas son islas artificiales construidas sobre el blando lecho del lago. Su construcción dependía en gran medida de materiales geológicos: barro arcilloso, sedimento orgánico, carrizo y tierra del lago. Estas capas se colocaban en parcelas rectangulares, formando plataformas estables gracias a la alta capacidad de retención de agua del fondo lacustre.
