Geocache Description:

This geocache is part of the MNSQ: Dakota County Founders series. It highlights the individuals who are credited with founding specific cities in Dakota County.

This particular cache highlights the founder of Burnsville, MN in William Byrne. William and his wife Julia immigrated from County Kilkerry in 1820 to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The Minnesota Territory opened up for settlers in 1849 and 4 years later William and his family moved to what is now the northwestern part of the city. In 1858 Byrnesville Township was authorized by the Dakota County board. The town clerks were not consistent with naming on the records going back and forth between Byrnesville and Burnsville. It wasn't until the 1960s at the cities incorporation the Burnsville was recognized by the state.

The first stage is located in a cemetery. Please be respectful of cemetery hours and others that may be visiting when you do. The final cache is not located in the cemetery.

At the posted coordinates you will be looking for the gravestone for William Byrne.

The final coordinates are N 44 45.AAA W 093 17.BBB.

AAA= Age listed on gravestone + 177.

BBB= Year William passed away - 1248.
