Geocache Description:

Welcome to my THANKSGIVING DAY CEMETERY CACHE series for 2025 !

Eleaser Willey was the first purchaser of this land in 1835. In 1852 he sold some of it to Joseph Alexander. In 1863 Alexander sold 1/4 acre to the School Board for School District #1 & #2 for a burying place for the use of the two school districts. It was to be known as “Alexander’s Graveyard.”

In 1875 The Brier Hill Cemetery Association of Rice township was formed. It purchased ground from Richard Willey next to (as the deed says) “the old burying ground known as the Willey Burying Ground.” The association kept burial records and maintained the cemetery until 1929 when the cemetery was turned over to the township..Early stones are for the following: Martha Cooley-1832, Pealeg Cooley and Fayett Hone-1838, Sarah Remsburg-1839, Isaac Cooley-1840, Eleaser Willey-1847, Catharine Alexander – 1859.
