Morgan Jones Park opened in 1934 and is named after the former Caerphilly MP Morgan Jones. Born in Gelligaer in 1885 and raised in Bargoed, he was elected to Parliament in the 1921 Caerphilly by-election. Jones also made history by becoming the first conscientious objector elected to Parliament. He held profound pacifist beliefs and refused to fight in the First World War. For this he was imprisoned in Wormwood Scrubs where he endured solitary confinement, abuse and a diet of bread and water.
While in Parliament, he served as a Junior Education Minister in the Labour governments of 1924 and 1929. He was re-elected to Parliament six more times before his death in 1939, aged 53. A commemorative information board celebrating the centenary of his election was unveiled in the park in 2021.
Morgan Jones Park was also the site of an open-air swimming pool, or lido and was added in the mid-1930s after the opening of the park. It was funded by the Special Areas Commission and was a popular feature until it was demolished in the 1970s or 1980s when modern indoor heated pools became more common. It was replaced by a childrens splash pad/paddling pool which is only open in th summer months.
Today, the "Green Flag" awarded park offers a variety of amenities, including a children's playground, a grass maze, a skate park, gym equipment, tennis courts, a bowling green and facilities for rugby, cricket, football, and basketball. The park spans over 15 acres and features landscaped gardens and walking paths, offering a peaceful retreat within the urban landscape with the historic Caerphilly Castle as a backdrop.
