The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, occurring on 21st December 2025, in the Northern Hemisphere. It marks the moment the Earth's North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun, resulting in the sun's lowest point in the sky and the fewest hours of daylight. Sunset is at 15:53pm, so let's met at the monument between 15:30pm and 16:00pm and watch the sun go down together and celebrate that from tomorrow, there will be more daylight each day for geocaching!
The high terrain rating reflects the steep ascent up the rickety old steps and the descent in darkness by torchlight. The steps can be avoided by parking in the free National Trust car park. There will be other hazards such as tree roots, low branches, rabbit holes, slippery mud and potentially more. Please remember to bring a torch!
Between 19th and 22nd December 2025, the December Solstice Souvenir can be earnt automatically by logging any event, geocache or Adventure Lab.
