Geocache Description:

5 Hints to Caching in Minnesota Winters!!!

I have met a few new to Minnesota Geocachers lately. One family from California and the other Texas. It is always fun to talk to long time cachers who have not found a cache in the winter!! So I made a series of caches to help them along!!

5. Get some sweet winter toys!!

There are attributes for some of these toys!

You can rent all of these, but I would at a minimum pick up some snow shoes. My favorite warehouse store carries these with some nice poles for a reasonable price. Wart-Hog can give you winter toy lessons if you have any questions.

  1. Snow Shoes are more helpful than you think. When you step on crusty top snow and have a delayed drop. That is a sign you need snow shoes. they spread out your weight and help you either gracefully go through snow or keep you on the crusty top. They also let you go over downed trees that have hidded caverns for you to be tripped up in.
  2. The motorized toys are nice, but can only get you close. It is fun to know someone that is willing to share these with you
  3. Ice skates! I have found caches on ice skates. "Wild Ice" is nature made frozen ponds or lakes, be careful You need to be careful in all cases of ice thickness. Here is a good graphic to help from the DNR.
  4. Skis are nice for the same reason that snow shoes are helpful.
