Geocache Description:

Murgle v Ljubljani

Murgle so četrt v Ljubljani.

Murgle in Ljubljana

Murgle is a district in Ljubljana. To the north, they border the Road to the Town Log, and to the south to the artificial melioration stream Mali graben. Mokrška Street divides them into New and Old Murgla, in which single-storey houses are built in a typical way. This part of the city was also known as the residence of some Slovenian political dignitaries. Hence the synonym for the more luxurious part of Ljubljana has been added to them; previously, this status was carried by the Rose Valley. The construction of Murgela houses began in the 70s of the 20th century. The design of the Murgle settlement was awarded as a competition project in 1965, and the designs and construction took place between 1965 and 1988.

The urban structure of the settlement is adapted to the autochthonous nature of the marshes, which has thus become its essential and characteristic component. The natural avenues of large trees along the marsh ditches were the starting point for the location of today's roads, which gave Murgla a patina of age and ingrown nature from the first day of settlement, which has been intensified over the years with additional greening. The connection of the settlement with nature is also expressed by the names of the streets, which are taken by default only after the tree rows planted next to them: Pod topoli, Pod hrast, Pod vrbami, Pod alšami, etc.

The road system is kept to a minimum by organizing the entire settlement into residential clusters (about 35 houses each) with a perimeter road on three sides; However, only residential paths lead to individual houses from the road. Such a traffic arrangement required the separation of garages from the houses and their union in garage arrays along the perimeter roads, with the distance between the house and the garage never exceeding 50 m. Such a transport system, which has been fully confirmed in the 40-year life of the settlement, frees the interior of the karyas from road noise and dust and creates more humane housing conditions.

The basic architectural element of the design of the karejo is a standardized ground floor terraced or atrium house. The settlement was built in three different periods - phases, each of which had its own technical, technological, normative, energy, and even socio-political starting points. The design unity of the settlement, which has been in the making for more than 40 years, could only be ensured by respecting some of the uniform elements of the design of houses or house groups determined at the beginning, regardless of the time of their realization.

The architecture of the design of individual houses is consciously simple. The main concern was the design of such a residential floor plan, which will be maximally functional in its entirety and in details, and where expensive residential areas will not be irrationally lost due to ill-considered and poorly usable spaces for optimal housing equipment. The visual and functional relationship between the interior residential and outdoor garden spaces has been particularly carefully thought out, as this is the only way to fully validate the essential advantages of a single-storey residential house.

The settlement of Murgle, which with its 720 new houses and an older hamlet along Mokrška Street is today an independent local community, has not yet been completed, despite its many years of construction. It is still missing 72 houses on the southern edge of the settlement along the Mali graben watercourse and a part of the settlement center (shops, services, catering, social spaces, school) on the northern edge of the settlement along the road to the city log.
