Seattle’s Healthy Streets began in 2020, when the city closed select neighborhood greenways to through-traffic so people could safely walk, bike, and play during the early pandemic. The idea took off, with residents embracing the calmer, people-first streets, and the program quickly grew to more than twenty miles. As the city evaluated how well they worked, several routes were made permanent and upgraded with clearer signs and traffic calming. Today, Healthy Streets remain as community spaces that prioritize neighbors over cars and give everyone a little more room to move.
