Billericay Baptist Church, Perry Street
History
According to The Baptist Magazine, London, 1835 and Whites Directory 1848 there was a Baptist chapel in Billericay formed by a congregation in 1815. This, I have been told, was in Chapel Street but closed in the early 1900s and has since been replaced by housing. So, obviously, was not the church building at this cache's location.
The Baptists returned to Billericay in the 1960s, presumably 1964 since the church had 60th anniversary celebrations in 2024. Initially they met in a hall further along Perry Street (near the Anglican church, I believe) before building and moving into the church at the current location in 1967. In the entrance can be seen two foundation stones dated 22nd July 1967, one laid by Honorary Minister Rev. P. Seymour Bragg on behalf of the church, the other laid by the Rev. D. S. Russell on behalf of the Baptist Union.
In addition to Perry Street, for some years now the church has also held regular Sunday services and various weekly groups at a second (smaller) location in Billericay, Sunnymede Chapel in Thynne Road.
The cache
The cache is a black container about 3cm across, not on church grounds but hidden along the nearby pavement. Please replace where found, nicely tucked in so not too obvious to passing muggles.
