I’ve literally been waiting years for MROSD to connect the upper & lower sections of La Honda Creek OSP, and they finally did it. They did a wonderful job and the new trails were worth the wait. After hiking the preserve a week ago before there were any hides, I decided to come back and hide at least one proper regular size container before the trails fill up.
There are several impressive trees in the preserve but this one especially caught my eye because it’s not a coast redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens), but a giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) which has its normal range far to the east in the Sierras. This one is nothing close to how big they get but still fairly impressive, with a large crown atop one of its twin stems.
I thought about hiding a cache near the tree but the terrain seemed a little too steep, so instead I placed a hide about 200 ft. (60 meters) away, near a bend in the trail that offers a fine view of it. Cache is an ammo can just a bit uphill.
