Coombs Bogs are a 6.55 acre Barnstable Land Trust property protected in 2012 thanks to the Coombs family. Barnstable Land Trust is a community-supported nonprofit organization that works to conserve land for future generations. Please be respectful of the land and wildlife as you search for this cache.
The waters of Coombs Bogs were once used to power a mill here, as well as provide water to three productive cranberry bogs. Cranberry harvest season was mid-September to November. Cranberries are typically first harvested dry using scoops or mechanical harvesters, and then the bogs are flooded for wet harvest. The channels you see around the boundaries of each bog were used for the purpose of flooding the bog.
Coombs Bogs are at the head of the Bumps River, and each bog is at a different stage of succession as the commercial bogs return to nature. This area supports a diverse array of wildlife including many different species of birds, fish, and amphibians.
Thank you to Barnstable Land Trust for supporting the placement of this geocache.
