(Please note: The above coordinates indicate the southern entrance of Woodley Town Centre Shopping Precinct and are not the final cache location.)
Woodley began as a fairly quiet rural village. In 1847, Kelly’s Directory described it as “a scattered village … principally of farm houses,” which is old‑fashioned English for “not much going on.” Before the main precinct existed, Woodley’s shops were spread across the settlement: small grocers, bakers, bootmakers, dairymen, and many cottage‑based businesses served the community.
The first stage of the Crockhamwell Road shopping precinct—now the core of Woodley Town Centre—was developed in 1965. At that time, the area was not pedestrianised. Further redevelopment followed in the 1970s: some council houses were demolished to make space for shops, and the old pub was replaced with a modern building. In 1971, the developers donated the precinct’s clock as a landmark feature.
Since then, the town centre has continued to host markets, community events, and adapt its retail offering. Today, there is an artisan market every Wednesday, a car boot sale every Sunday, and a vibrant Saturday market.
Fun fact: Local residents sometimes joke about the off‑centre, asymmetrical Woodley Shopping Precinct clock tower. In 2024, one resident even made a fake Facebook post announcing a fictional £20m redevelopment plan featuring a grand Victorian‑style replacement clock tower—classic local humour at its finest!
