ようこそ、比治山の名水「酒の泉」へ。今あなたが立っているこの場所に残る井戸は、かつて比治山に湧く銘水が、広島の酒造りを静かに支えてきたことを証明する、数少ない痕跡のひとつです。かつて広島市内での酒造りにおいて、清らかな仕込み水の供給源は限られていました。その中で「比治山の井戸水」は、「柔らかすぎず、硬すぎない。酒造りに適したミネラルバランスを持った中硬水」として知られ、東広島・西条の「市の井戸水」、竹原の「昭蓮寺の井戸水」と並び、高く評価されていたと伝えられています。
Welcome to Sake no Izumi (The Spring of Sake). The well remaining right here, where you are currently standing, is one of the few surviving vestiges that prove how the pristine spring water from Mount Hijiyama once quietly supported Hiroshima's sake brewing. In the past, sources of pure brewing water (shikomi-mizu) were limited for sake production within Hiroshima City. Among these, the "Well Water of Hijiyama" was renowned as a "medium-hard water with a mineral balance ideal for sake brewing—neither too soft nor too hard." It is said to have been highly praised, ranking alongside the "City Well Water" of Saijo (Higashi-Hiroshima) and the "Shorenji Well Water" of Takehara.
ところで皆さんは、つい最近まで、この比治山の井戸水を「仕込み水」として用いてきた地酒が残っていたことをご存じでしょうか？白島に蔵を構える原酒造の銘酒 「蓬莱鶴（ほうらいつる）」 がそれにあたります。残念ながら、現在販売中の「蓬莱鶴」に、比治山の水は使われていません。そしてこの井戸のすぐ横に設置されていたシンボル「酒の泉」の貯水タンクも、2016年ついに撤去されてしまいました。
By the way, did you know that until quite recently, there was a local sake (jizake) that utilized this very Hijiyama well water as its brewing water? That sake is the famous brand "Horaitsuru" produced by Hara Shuzo, a brewery located in Hakushima. Regrettably, the water from Mount Hijiyama is no longer used in the "Horaitsuru" currently being sold. Furthermore, the water storage tank for the symbolic "Sake no Izumi", which was installed right next to this well, has finally been removed.
しかし４基あった井戸は現在も人知れず残されています。そう遠くない将来、再開発で姿を消してしまう運命にあると思われますが、今ならまだかつてここに「酒造りのための水汲み場」があったことを確かに実感することが可能です。残された井戸と、そこ向けて伸びる石畳が完全に失われてしまう前に、チャンスがあればアクセスしてみてください。
It is possible that the well itself may also disappear due to redevelopment in the not-too-distant future. However, right now, you can still experience the reality that there was once definitely a "water collection point for sake brewing" here. We encourage you to visit before the well and the stone pavement leading to it are completely lost.

（トリビアの種）比治山はかつてあちこちから岩清水が湧き出る、保水力豊かな山でした。現在は廃業されましたが、南段原にあった老舗和菓子店「扇屋」では、醴泉（井戸水）が飲める自販機まで設置されていたほどです。今は枯れてしまいましたが、酒の泉のすぐそばにある明泉寺の裏手にあった小さな泉跡の法面には、再開発後もしばらく岩清水が滲み出ていた痕跡が確認できます。
(Trivia) Hijiyama was once a mountain rich in water retention, with rock springs welling up from various spots. As a prime example, Ogiya, a traditional Japanese confectionery shop in the Danbara district, even had a vending machine that dispensed Reisen (the well water) for drinking.
