Geocache Description:

All Saints Church, West Ham is one of the oldest and most historically significant churches in East London. The parish dates back to at least the 12th century, when West Ham was still a rural settlement on the edge of the Essex marshes. Although the church has been restored and altered many times, it remains a powerful reminder of the area’s medieval origins.

The Church is a Grade I listed building and has features from several periods, the church contains relics from the nearby dissoled ancient Langthorne Abbey. The sturdy west tower, one of the church’s most striking elements, dates largely from the late medieval period and would once have served as a landmark for travellers crossing the surrounding low-lying land. Inside, later restorations added Victorian details while carefully preserving older stonework and proportions.

Over the centuries, All Saints has witnessed huge changes — from a small farming community to the rapid industrial growth of the 19th century, and finally to the modern cityscape of today. Despite bomb damage during the Second World War and extensive restoration, the church continues to serve as a place of worship and community life.

Look at how this historic church has stood at the heart of West Ham for hundreds of years, quietly watching the world change around it.

You may struggle to find the information easily after dark, hence the cache is not recommended, although not impossible after dark.
