ΜΝΗΜΕΙΟ ΠΕΣΟΝΤΩΝ ΠΥΡΟΣΒΕΣΤΩΝ ΥΜΗΤΤΟΥ / FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS OF HYMETTUS

Το μνημείο πεσόντων Πυροσβεστών στον Υμηττό (δάσος Καρέα), στήθηκε στο σημείο ακριβώς που στις 22 Ιουλίου του 1998 έχασαν τη ζωή τους οι τρεις πυροσβέστες Δημήτριος Μαλούκος, Θεμιστοκλής Μαυραειδής και Αλέξανδρος Διαβολής και ο εθελοντής πυροσβέστης Βασίλης Καραμολέγκος, προσπαθώντας να σβήσουν τη φωτιά που είχε ξεσπάσει στην ευρύτερη περιοχή του Καρέα. Το μεσημέρι της 22ας Ιουλίου 1998, μία μεγάλη πυρκαγιά ξέσπασε στην περιοχή του Καρέα στους πρόποδες του Υμηττού. Την ίδια ημέρα εκδηλώθηκαν φωτιές στη Σαρωνίδα, το Λαγονήσι και την Ανάβυσσο, ενώ κάτοικοι της Αγίας Μαρίνας στην Ηλιούπολη έβλεπαν τις φλόγες να καίνε τα σπίτια τους. Στο πύρινο μέτωπο του Καρέα επιχειρούσαν οι αρχιπυροσβέστες Δημήτρης Ν. Μαλούκος (47 ετών) και Θεμιστοκλής Β. Μαυραειδής (41 ετών), ο πυροσβέστης Αλέξανδρος Μ. Διαβολής (26 ετών) και ο εθελοντής δασοπυροσβέστης, Δημήτριος Αγγ. Καραμολέγκος. Ο άνεμος άλλαξε ξαφνικά κατεύθυνση, οι τέσσερις πυροσβέστες περικυκλώθηκαν από τις φλόγες και κάηκαν ζωντανοί. Η είδηση συγκλόνισε την Ελλάδα και έγινε πρωτοσέλιδο στις εφημερίδες. Η μαρτυρία του εθελοντή δασοπυροσβέστη, Γιώργου Χαρδαλά, που βρέθηκε στο σημείο, είναι συγκλονιστική: “Η φωτιά είχε αποκόψει την πλαγιά πίσω τους. Έφυγα τρέχοντας να ειδοποιήσω τους άλλους και τότε σαν να άκουσα μία κραυγή“. Σύμφωνα με τα ρεπορτάζ της εποχής, οι τέσσερις πυροσβέστες δεν ήταν επαρκώς εκπαιδευμένοι για δασικές πυρκαγιές και επομένως ήταν ανέτοιμοι να αντιμετωπίσουν την έκτακτη ανάγκη. Η Ένωση Υπαλλήλων Πυροσβεστικού Σώματος Αττικής κατήγγειλε τον σχεδιασμό: “Μας ανατέθηκε το έργο της δασοπυρόσβεσης χωρίς να υπάρχει στοιχειώδης οργάνωση και σχεδιασμός, ούτε καν το ελάχιστο χρονοδιάγραμμα για να προετοιμαστούμε. Εδώ δεν έχουμε συμπληρώσει τα οργανικά κενά του Πυροσβεστικού Σώματος σε ό,τι αφορά τις φωτιές σε αστικές περιοχές και μας έστειλαν να αναλάβουμε τις φωτιές στα δάση“.
Συνάδελφοί τους ανέφεραν στην εφημερίδα “Τα Νέα” ότι τρία ήταν τα λάθη που οδήγησαν στην τραγωδία:
α) οι τέσσερις πυροσβέστες στάλθηκαν στο μέτωπο της φωτιάς χωρίς να τους ακολουθούν ενισχύσεις,
β) ο οδηγός του πυροσβεστικού οχήματος το εγκατέλειψε και ανέβηκε με τους υπόλοιπους συναδέλφους του στη βουνοπλαγιά, και
γ) δεν είχαν επαρκείς γνώσεις για τη γεωμορφολογία της περιοχής.
Οι Μαλούκος και Μαυραειδής ήταν έγγαμοι και πατέρες δύο παιδιών, ενώ ο Διαβολής είχε αρραβωνιαστεί και σκόπευε να παντρευτεί. Ο 20χρονος Καραμολέγκος ανήκε στην Εθελοντική Δασοπροστασία του Δήμου Καισαριανής από το 1995. Όλοι τους κηδεύτηκαν με τιμές ήρωα. Από το 2000 στο σημείο που έχασαν την ζωή τους, έχει τοποθετηθεί μαρμάρινο μνημείο προς τιμήν τους.
Στη βάση του έχει χαραχθεί η ακόλουθη επιγραφή:
“Διαβάτη στάσου και προσκύνησε στη μνήμη εκείνων που έφυγαν για την ζωή αυτού του δάσους για τη ζωή τη δική μας για τη ζωή των παιδιών μας“.
Η ΚΡΥΠΤΗ
Η κρύπτη είναι ένα μαύρο film canister και εμπεριέχει logbook για την καταγραφή επίσκεψης.

The Fallen Firefighters Memorial on Mount Hymettus (Kareas Forest) was erected at the exact spot where, on July 22, 1998, three firefighters—Dimitrios Maloukos, Themistoklis Mavraeidis, and Alexandros Diavolis—and the volunteer firefighter Vasilis Karamolegkos lost their lives while trying to extinguish a fire that had broken out in the wider Kareas area. At midday on July 22, 1998, a large wildfire erupted in the Kareas area at the foothills of Mount Hymettus. On the same day, fires also broke out in Saronida, Lagonisi, and Anavyssos, while residents of Agia Marina in Ilioupoli watched the flames burn their homes. At the Kareas fire front were Chief Fire Officers Dimitris N. Maloukos (47 years old) and Themistoklis V. Mavraeidis (41 years old), Firefighter Alexandros M. Diavolis (26 years old), and the volunteer forest firefighter Dimitrios Ang. Karamolegkos. The wind suddenly changed direction, the four firefighters were surrounded by flames, and they were burned alive. The news shocked Greece and made front-page headlines in the newspapers. The testimony of volunteer forest firefighter Giorgos Hardalas, who was at the scene, is harrowing: “The fire had cut off the slope behind them. I ran to warn the others, and then it was as if I heard a scream.”
According to reports of the time, the four firefighters were not adequately trained for forest fires and were therefore unprepared to deal with the emergency. The Union of Fire Service Employees of Attica criticized the planning: “We were assigned the task of forest firefighting without even basic organization and planning, not even a minimal timetable to prepare. We have not even filled the staffing gaps of the Fire Service regarding fires in urban areas, and they sent us to handle forest fires.”
Their colleagues told the newspaper ‘’Ta Nea’’ that three mistakes led to the tragedy:
a) the four firefighters were sent to the fire front without reinforcements,
b) the driver of the fire engine abandoned the vehicle and climbed the hillside with the rest of his colleagues, and
c) they lacked sufficient knowledge of the area’s terrain.
Maloukos and Mavraeidis were married and fathers of two children, while Diavolis was engaged and planning to marry. The 20-year-old Karamolegkos had been a member of the Volunteer Forest Protection group of the Municipality of Kaisariani since 1995. All were buried with honors befitting heroes. Since 2000, a marble monument has been placed at the site where they lost their lives in their honor.
At its base, the following inscription is engraved:
“Passerby, stop and bow in memory of those who left for the life of this forest, for our own lives, and for the lives of our children.”
