OMG Cleans Up George Washington Carver Park Cache In Trash Out® Event

This cache has been archived.

Scout's Mix: We had a great turnout for such a cold, cold day. We pulled out a lot of garbage in just over an hour. While the cold was an obstacle, I can't imagine tackling this park in the summer months.

Thank you to everyone that came out! I am hoping to run another CITO in March, and I think this location could benefit from another hour of work.

Geocache Description:

The Backstory:

While living in Duluth, MN I participated in many community organized MLK Day events. Churches and other community partners host many volunteering opportunities that day in an effort to focus on service, reflection, and the celebration of King's legacy. It's amazing to see almost the whole city mobalize to improve the area. I've never seen anything like it.

I have many geocaching resolutions for the New Year. One includes participating in at least one CITO per month. While caching in the area, I stumbled upon at least 2 abandoned campsites--and the debris from them keeps spreading. I'm hoping the weather will cooperate and allow us the opportunity to support the local community by cleaning the debris of former campsites from the George Washington Carver Park in Springfield, MO.

The Specifics:

  • Parking at the park is limited, but the Seven Day Adventist Church will allow parking in their nearby lot for this specific event.
  • Please bring your own trash picking tools (I'll bring trashbags and gloves).
  • I'll have some basic snacks and water on hand, if needed.
  • There are no bathrooms onsite and I don't have confirmation that we'll have any to use. Please plan accordingly--you might have to leave the event to find a bathroom facility.

  • The event will kick off at 1pm at the posted coordinates. We'll divide into groups and establish the process for debris removal.
  • We'll reconvene at the posted coordinates at 3pm. (If you arrive late or leave earlier, please check-in with someone at the coorindates so we know you're not hurt/lost--I know we're geocachers...but even cachers can get hurt or lost in the woods).
