A new track for Te Araroa Walkers has opened up. This is close to the start on Whananaaki North Road if neading north bound. There is a small place on the side of the road but please don't block any gateways. The track is mostly on a ULR - an Unformed Legal Road. The local farmer has kindly let Te Araroa track go across some of his land so you don't have to walk through bull paddocks. Te Araroa Trust have installed stiles and is maintaing it. As it is still "work in progress" it is not a manicured track but is still beautiful. At times you will get wet feet at the only creek crossing.
In Northland the Kereru or NZ Wood Pigeon is known as a kukupa. Everytime I have walked and worked on this track I have heard them - either the soft coo sound or the whoosh of their wings in flight. I just haven't seen any here. Hopefully you do!
