Welcome to Canada
This little plot of land has a history that isn't obvious.
You are standing on the railbed of the former New Westminster Southern Railway. The railway started just south of us, at the US border and terminated at Brownsville, opposite to New Westminster.
When the railway was opened in 1891, a Border inspection station was established. It was about 300 metres (984 ft) west of the present Pacific (Douglas) crossing.
When the track was relocated via White Rock in 1909, the border station moved westward creating the present Peace Arch Border Crossing.
Now you know why there are two crossings in close proximity to one another.
The tracks followed Highway 15, to the north of here, but veered off to the east to get around a hill. You can drive on the railbed if you turn east at 80th Avenue and then north on Harvie Road. The NWSR geocaches are located along this northern portion of the railbed.
