You’d expect a place called Beaver Falls to choose a beaver as its symbol. Instead, the Beaver Falls High School has long used the Tiger as its mascot. That may sound like chaotic branding, but there’s a deeper story rooted in sport, identity, and local tradition.
The tiger mascot was adopted early in the 20th century as the emblem for Beaver Falls High School’s athletic teams. During that era, schools across America were embracing fierce animal imagery to represent strength, competitiveness, and fierceness on the field. Tigers were popular choices because they conveyed power and intimidation, especially in football and basketball.
While local lore sometimes jokingly claims the tiger was chosen to “scare away the Pittsburgh Panthers”, the more grounded explanation is that the community and student body simply wanted a symbol that projected ferocity and pride, which a beaver, laudably industrious but not exactly fearsome, didn’t deliver in a packed stadium. Once the Tiger identity took hold, it became a central part of local culture.
