Back by (I hope) popular demand, this is the 6th year of my camping and Cannonball Run weekends. For anyone who hasn't attended before, this is a weekend of caching events that I hope will allow as many people as possible to join us for as much of the weekend as suits them. Stay for as little or as much as you like, and hope to see you there.
So what's this particular event all about?
Once again we are at the excellent Firebird Cafe in Levin, as the host venue for this event.
If you've not been there, you can check out their menu using THIS LINK.
Come along to share in a couple of hours of caching chat and companionship, with the added extra of participating in a local treasure hunt (participation optional). Having been influenced (as a teenager) by such films as "Cannonball Run", "Gumball Rally", and "It's a mad mad mad mad world", this treasure hunt will be a vehicular team-based thing, with a few small prizes on offer. I anticipate teams should consist of approx 4 people, and anyone wanting to join in can be placed into a team on the day. The teams will go out at staggered times during the event and then always return to base with (hopefully) the desired information.
There is no prep necessary on your part, with the simple exception of making sure your phone can scan a QR Code, and if that all sounds like far too much for you then simply come and join those of us staying at the cafe for a chat and food (optional).
And then maybe hang around afterwards as I hope to get a new cache or three published :)
Please Note: FTF logs will not be allowed on this event. Events are 'attended' rather than 'found'.
The mainstay of the weekend will be based at the Kimberley Reserve, on the outskirts of Levin. This reserve allows Motor Homes and Camping (for a maximum of 2 nights) that is completely free of charge. You can learn more from the council website Kimberley-Reserve-Levin.
Camping is by permit only. You can sort out your own (free) permit using their online booking form on the link above or else there is a security guard that goes around the campground at about 7pm each evening, and they can issue permits on the spot. They are still free to do it this way.
The facilities there are rudimentary but more than adequate. There are toilets and changing rooms available, drinking water, and good mobile reception here.
Nestled right by the Ohau river, the reserve is no more than 8km max (driving distance) from all the facilities of Levin such as supermarkets, cafes and takeaways, fuel, shops etc.
For anyone who wants to attend the weekend but would prefer a tad more luxury than available at Kimberley, there is a Motor Camp in Levin, as well as plenty of Motels etc to choose from.
