St Mary's is unique among English churches in having two towers.
Two other churches are similar, one in nearby Wanborough, the other in Ormskirk in Lancashire but in both the central spire is smaller and subordinate to the west tower. At Purton both tower and spire are full size.
It is likely that Christian worship has been celebrated on this site since Saxon times though the building was built and re-built from the 13th to the 15th centuries (the mediaeval period) when the church formed part of the endowments of Malmesbury Abbey.
