KWT #4: Well-Kom Back to Surfer’s Paradise!
The cache, camo-taped preform tube, is hidden just off the board walk as it makes its way south past Slangkop Point towards the lighthouse.
It is a replacement for an earlier cache near this location GCA5HG3 KBT #4: Well-Kom to Surfer’s Paradise! which was hidden on 3/3/23 and archived on 22/7/25 after some 33 finds with 1 FP. It went missing whilst I was away from the country and I was unable to maintain it ‘within a reasonable period’. Kommetjie is ‘the epicentre of high-performance surfing’ on the Cape Peninsula, providing ideal conditions for surfers of all ages and abilities in a wide range of beach-breaks, points and reefs.
Situated on the West coast of the Peninsula, halfway between Cape Town and Cape Point, this tranquil coastal village is the first landfall on the African continent for swells generated in the stormy 4 000 km fetch known as the Roaring Forties, guaranteeing a consistent, year-round supply of waves of all shapes and sizes.
The resident surfing community includes numerous current and former national champions in various age categories and wave-riding disciplines, dedicated free-surfers who shun contests and revel in the many powerful surf breaks, and a hardcore group of big wave chargers who paddle and tow into some the world’s largest rideable waves.
It also attracts hordes of surfers from elsewhere who flock to the area with longboards, bodyboards, kneeboards, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP), paddle-skis, kayaks, kiteboards and other surfing equipment.
The main wave is the Outer Kom (5*) – ‘a giant, lumbering but barrelling lefthander that breaks far out to sea’ . . .
. . . ‘left-hand point. Thick peaks break on an outer reef, before running onto the inside ledge. On a big day, getting caught inside can set you back a good 15 minutes as you get pummelled in the impact zone. Best in clean 6-10-foot west swell and any light east wind’.
However, on the inside is Inner Kom (3*) - a perfect, zippering little reef wave that spins forever and is beloved by groms (young surfers) and longboarders (surfers on longer, wider boards) . . . ‘on the inside at Outer Kom lies a mini-point. You have to sit virtually in the kelp to catch the waves that bend from the Outer, travel through the kelp and reform near the rocks. Soft, fun walling lefts up to about 3 feet. Popular grom and longboard spot’.
In between the two is The Ledge (3*) - a short, barrelling section between the kelp heads’ . . . ‘the inside ledge between the Outer and the Inner. Fun at high tide in glassy seas on a 3-5 feet west swell’.
