Area Description:
This EarthCache is located in Kiryat Shprinzak, a neighborhood built on the southwestern slopes of Mount Carmel, one of Israel’s most geologically significant regions. Mount Carmel forms a limestone ridge that rises sharply from the Mediterranean coastal plain and represents millions of years of geological history shaped by marine deposition, tectonic uplift, erosion, and weathering.
The bedrock in this area is primarily sedimentary limestone and dolomite, formed during periods when the region was covered by a shallow sea. Over time, movements of the Earth’s crust uplifted these layers, exposing them above sea level. The visible rock formations around the neighborhood provide evidence of this ancient marine environment, including layering (stratification) and variations in rock hardness.
Kiryat Shprinzak lies near the transition zone between the Carmel ridge and the coastal plain, making it an excellent location to observe how geology influences topography. The sloped terrain, natural drainage patterns, and soil accumulation in lower areas are direct results of erosion processes acting on the Carmel’s limestone bedrock. Rainwater, slightly acidic due to dissolved carbon dioxide, slowly dissolves limestone, contributing to karst features common throughout Mount Carmel.
The area’s geology also affects vegetation and land use. Thin, rocky soils dominate higher slopes, while deeper soils collect in lower sections, influencing which plants can grow and how humans have developed the land. Urban construction in Kiryat Shprinzak required adaptation to the underlying rock, including terracing and slope stabilization.
This EarthCache highlights the connection between ancient geological processes and modern urban landscapes, demonstrating how natural forces continue to shape Mount Carmel—even in the heart of a residential neighborhood.
How did the cache idea is came to me:
I was just passing from my home to the park. And I noticed the large stone blocking my way. It had an Intersting geological build and intersting mountain formation. After I passed to the park... I set on the bench. And realized that it is the time for the new cache in Haifa. So this was my cache Idea-EarthCache.

שלום לכולם!
בשנים האחרונות אזור שפרינצק התפתח והתווספו בו לא מעט מטמונים. עם זאת, עד היום כל המטמונים באזור היו מטמונים מסורתיים או חידות. הגיע הזמן ל-EarthCache הראשון בשפרינצק ובאזור חיפה.
תיאור האזור
ה-EarthCache ממוקם בקריית שפרינצק, שכונה הבנויה על המדרונות הדרום-מערביים של הר הכרמל, אחד האזורים הגאולוגיים החשובים בישראל.
הר הכרמל הוא רכס גירני המתנשא בחדות מעל מישור החוף של הים התיכון, והוא מייצג מיליוני שנות היסטוריה גאולוגית שעוצבה על-ידי שקיעה ימית, התרוממות טקטונית, סחיפה ובליה.
הסלעים באזור הם בעיקר סלעי משקע – גיר ודולומיט, שנוצרו בתקופות בהן האזור היה מכוסה בים רדוד. עם הזמן, תנועות בקרום כדור הארץ גרמו להתרוממות השכבות ולחשיפתן מעל פני הים. תצורות הסלע הנראות בסביבת השכונה מעידות על הסביבה הימית הקדומה, וניתן להבחין בשכבות סלע (סטרטיפיקציה) ובהבדלים בקשיות הסלע.
קריית שפרינצק נמצאת באזור המעבר בין רכס הכרמל לבין מישור החוף, ולכן זהו מקום מצוין לצפייה בהשפעת הגאולוגיה על הטופוגרפיה. השיפועים, דפוסי הניקוז הטבעיים והצטברות הקרקע באזורים הנמוכים הם תוצאה ישירה של תהליכי סחיפה הפועלים על סלעי הגיר של הכרמל.
מי גשמים, שהם חומציים במידה קלה בשל פחמן דו-חמצני מומס, ממיסים בהדרגה את הגיר ותורמים ליצירת תופעות קרסטיות האופייניות לאזור הכרמל.
הגאולוגיה של האזור משפיעה גם על הצמחייה והשימוש בקרקע. בקרקעות הדקות והסלעיות שבאזורים הגבוהים גדלים צמחים מסוימים בלבד, בעוד שבאזורים הנמוכים מצטברות קרקעות עמוקות יותר. הפיתוח העירוני בקריית שפרינצק חייב התאמה לתשתית הסלעית, כולל טרסות וייצוב מדרונות.
EarthCache זה מדגיש את הקשר בין תהליכים גאולוגיים עתיקים לבין הנוף העירוני המודרני, וממחיש כיצד כוחות טבע ממשיכים לעצב את הר הכרמל – גם בלב שכונת מגורים.
כיצד נולד רעיון המטמון
עברתי מביתי אל הפארק הסמוך, ובמהלך הדרך הבחנתי בסלע גדול החוסם את השביל. לסלע הייתה צורה מעניינת ומבנה גאולוגי בולט, והוא נראה כחלק מתצורת ההר. לאחר חישוב קטן חשבתי שזהו זמן מקסים למטמון החדש
כך נולד הרעיון למטמון זה.
