Like a gateway between two worlds, in this place of history, one can admire the valley of the Setta River and the valley of the Reno River.

The history of this location is a profound intertwining of folk devotion and historical memory. Originally, the summit of Monte Sole served as a spiritual landmark for local communities, who would gather in procession for the Feast of the Ascension, pausing before an ancient cross that held an image of the Blessed Virgin.

This tradition was brutally shattered in the autumn of 1944 during the Marzabotto massacre, when these sacred sites were transformed into scenes of death. A poignant example is the nearby church of Santa Maria Assunta in Casaglia, where civilians sought the protection of the Madonna in vain before being massacred alongside their parish priest.

Following the war, the commitment to never forget led to the rebirth of these symbols: the metal cross seen today, reconstructed in 1968, is no longer merely a devotional marker, but a monument standing over the Peace Park. It serves to unite the memory of the martyrdom of the faithful and the clergy with the hope for reconciliation, transforming an area of destruction into a path of pilgrimage and civil reflection.
