La leggenda è parzialmente modificata rispetto all’originale per renderla parte integrante
dell’enigma.
Secondo un’antica leggenda nelle nostre terre viveva la ninfa Ambra, la fanciulla nella notte si
dilettava in danze ipnotiche, attirando pian piano l’attenzione di Ombrone che se ne innamorò. La
ninfa, però, sdegnosa non corrispondeva e fuggì cinque volte da lui. Ombrone non si diede mai per
vinto e la inseguì per la maremma, fino a che le forze di Ambra non cominciarono a cedere.
Ombrone si convinse di averla raggiunta, ma quando stava per afferrarla, lei invocò l’aiuto di
Diana, che subito la trasformò in un’isoletta di roccia in mezzo al fiume, qui nacque Istia
d’Ombrone. Ombrone rattristato iniziò ad abbracciarla con le sue acque e a piangere, ma la roccia
era muta e non rispondeva. Il tempo passava e il fiume continuava a consumare la roccia, a furia di
scorrere e di abbracciarla. Si dice che il lamento del fiume sia stato udibile a lungo da pastori,
butteri, abitanti del luogo sottoforma di canto, ma che ad oggi non sia più udibile dagli umani, ma
solo dagli uccelli. Gli uccelli ascoltano e custodiscono il canto segretamente nei loro nidi.
Purtroppo negli anni il canto non è più chiaro, pare che si sia spostato come l’acqua che scorre e
solo chi conosce la storia di Ambra può risalire la corrente e arrivare a comprenderlo.

The Song of Istia d’Ombrone
This legend has been subtly altered, so that it may become an inseparable part of the riddle.
Long ago, in these lands, there lived the nymph Ambra. By night she surrendered herself to
hypnotic dances, slowly drawing the gaze of Ombrone, who fell deeply in love with her. Yet the
nymph remained distant and unyielding, fleeing from him five times. Ombrone never ceased his
pursuit, chasing her across the Maremma, until Ambra’s strength began to wane.
Believing he had finally reached her, Ombrone stretched out to claim her—but at that very moment
Ambra called upon Diana. The goddess answered at once, transforming the nymph into a small
rocky isle in the heart of the river. Thus was Istia d’Ombrone born.
Sorrowful, Ombrone wrapped her in his waters and wept. But the rock was silent, and did not
answer. Time flowed on, and the river slowly wore away the stone, endlessly passing over it,
endlessly embracing it. It is said that for many years the river’s lament could be heard by shepherds,
butteri, and the people of these lands, rising like a song. Today, however, that song is no longer
meant for human ears—it belongs only to the birds. They listen, and they guard it in secret, hidden
within their nests.
As the years passed, the song grew faint and fragmented. Like running water, it shifted and
wandered. Only those who know Ambra’s story can follow the current upstream and learn to
understand it once more.
