Geocache Description:

I PROMISE this is an easy multi that you can get done faster than
it takes to order a cup of coffee at the nearby establishment.
You can do both on an average lunch break from the convention center with ease.
Stage one is 100% ADA accessible.
Stage two will require standing and stepping off the sidewalk slightly.

🧚🏼‍♂️🧚🏼‍♂️🧚🏼‍♂️Scroll to the bottom for the easy stage two field puzzle. Enjoy!  🧚🏼‍♂️🧚🏼‍♂️🧚🏼‍♂️

This Cache is dedicated to Linny & Susan Pacillo, the Anchorage Parking Fairies of the 90's.
The parking garage in front of you at GZ of stage one is named for Linny, also known as Carolyn (but no one actually knew her as Carolyn!).
Anchorage Daily News did an incredible job of capturing their story in action, their journey to burning their wings, and the long-standing legacy of these two sisters. You can read the whole story here:

"The Anchorage Parking Fairies: How a $75 Parking Ticket Started a Movement,"  by David Reamer (2022)

"Anchorage Parking Fairies Feed Meters to Protest Parking Tickets," by Sheila Toomey (1994)

The Parking Fairie Facebook Page

The general gist is that Linny got a parking ticket she really didn't deserve. She talked with friends and found that a lot of Anchoragites had similar silly stories of getting large tickets for dumb reasons, many that had little to do with actual parking skills or meter feeding. Susan had an office downtown and learned that some of her clients actually avoided downtown because of this overzealous parking attendant.
Linny decided to "stick it" to the municipality parking enforcement by making it impossible for them to write tickets as often as possible. She accepted donations at the service station she and her sister managed, and then Linny and Susan would spend afternoons dressing up as fairies, feeding any meters that were close to expiration as often as they could, with donations collected from other citizens.

At first, the Anchorage Parking Authority thought it was a cute gesture, but when the donations continued to roll in, and the sisters invested in a fairy-mobile (a repainted and restored former meter maid cart), they began to take the movement seriously.

The APA ended up collecting $100,000 less in tickets and overall revenue in 1994 and 1995. In 1997, the head of the APA-- the man who originally ticketed Linny and Susan-- retired, and in 1998, the municipality decided to move ticket enforcement into the hands of sworn police officers. The sisters celebrated by burning thier tutus and wings in a ceremonial pink burn barrel. They continued their good deeds after this, including a visit to Seattle, where you can actually be fined $23 for feeding someone else's meter.

Linny passed after a long battle with muscular dystrophy in 2006, and the parking garage you now stand in front of was named in her honor in 2007.

In 2019, Susan shared the story from her own perspective as part of the Arctic Entries showcase. Listen to her here. It's so worth the time.

Here at stage one GZ, you will see a stained glass mural of the sisters.
How many distinct flowers are there in the design?
The ones that are partially cut off by the window structure count as a whole flower.
Add 23 to that number to get the final coordinates.

Stage One Coordinates: N 61 12.945 W 149 53.600

Stage Two Coordinates: N 61 12.941, W 149 53.6xx
xx= number of flowers plus 23.

Enjoy the very short walk to stage two and look for a magnetic container slightly larger than your typical bison tube.
While you walk, consider feeding a meter or two.
And remember to pay for your own parking, too: the private parking lots are not as lenient as APD!

For those of you from out of town: The Permanent Fund Dividend Office and Child Support Office is just next to Stage One. If there is a line out the door, it's probably the last day to file for your PFD in person (late March) or time to pick up your check if you have no permanent mailing address or bank account (October). I once had to stand in line here to file, because my last name was incorrectly listed (divorce happens, y'all, no matter how many Birkenstocks you own), and I remember thinking-- everyone standing in this line is making $1,000 an hour standing here. Why is everyone so miserable? So just remember, if they look bummed standing in line, you don't need to feel bad for them! They are making that money!
