Deer, cattle and horses crossing signs are fairly commonplace. I love that the local otters have their own sign too.
Kildare County Council erected these signs 10 years ago to alert motorists that they are driving on a road that otters use frequently to cross between the Rye River and the Royal Canal in their search for food.
The signs were erected after requests from the public and under advice from the National Parks and Wildlife Service who had reported many otter deaths along the Kilcock to Maynooth Road over the preceeding few years.
The elusive creatures like to move around at dusk and dawn which puts them in danger from passing motorists who may not see them in the fading light.
Otters are on the decline in Ireland. They are widely distributed across the island in both freshwater and coastal habitats.
Best of luck finding the cache, and wishing you even better luck spotting an otter!
