Geocache Description:

Bluebirds are small North American migratory thrushes in the genus Sialia, known for their vibrant blue plumage, often symbolizing happiness. Three main species exist—Eastern, Western, and Mountain—typically found in open woodlands, farmlands, and orchards. They are insectivorous/omnivorous, nest from March through August, and are known for being monogamous.

Key Species and Characteristics:

  • Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis): Features a bright blue back and red/rusty throat and chest, with males being more vibrant than females.
  • Western Bluebird (Sialia mexicana): Similar to the Eastern but with a blue throat and gray belly on males.
  • Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides): The brightest, often appearing entirely sky blue or turquoise.
  • Behavior: They are known to nest in cavities or birdhouses and are attracted to mealworms.
  • Conservation: While populations have shown increases, they face high mortality rates in their first year.
