ECRR - Quarry
The steep and narrow Emigration Canyon served the Mormons as the entrance to their future home. Later from its rocky walls came most of the sandstone and limestone which built Salt Lake City.
The heavy rocks were hauled on mule wagons. Later the mule teams were replaced by a railroad which went a little further than Wagner's Brewery. A narrow gauge electrified rail line was built later to connect the city with the quarries in Pinecrest. Emigration Canyon Rail Road was also used as a passenger line.
The rails were replaced by the current road. I read that this quarry was used for the construction of this road. It is close to the Gravel Pit / Stone Crusher stop of the line.
I was in this quarry a couple of times earlier looking for fossils and crystals. I had mixed results. During my last visit I hid a cache here. (Check the white calcite veins on the grey limestone on the quarry's wall!)
The cache is a plastic container. It has a railroad themed stamp, log and two hand made crochet hearts for the finders. Valentine's Day is coming and they can be a unique present. No pen. I also dropped a travel bug. It was labeled "missing" when I found it.
Happy caching!
