白燕街，大致范围包括红棉路与白燕三街一带，是佛山一处充满市井生活气息的特色街区。1996年，为缓解下岗职工就业压力——尤其是原广东省红棉丝织厂结业后的职工安置问题，并鼓励低收入群体自主创业，有关部门在红棉路设立了一个临时性质的花鸟鱼虫市场。此地曾有外贸局的白燕饲养场，便将其命名为“白燕花鸟鱼虫步行街”，寓意吉祥美好，市民习惯亲切地称之为“白燕街”。
长约200米的红棉路两侧店铺林立，主要经营观赏鸟类、金鱼、热带鱼、鱼缸、绿植、盆景、猫狗、爬宠、园艺用品、渔具及相关宠物用品，其间也穿插着字画、玉器、古玩、茶具、钱币、陶瓷、旧书、花洒水龙头、通渠道具等特色小店。白燕三街两侧则以服装、玩具、小食等商铺为主。这里虽规模不大却品类齐全，物品琳琅满目而价格接地气，吸引众多市民前来游赏、选购。街上氛围热闹，往来交谈与议价之声不绝，洋溢着淳朴的市井温情与生活意趣。
对于许多佛山人来说，白燕街承载了他们无数的欢乐回忆。从80后到00后，乃至10后，不少人曾在这里度过欢乐的童年时光。我仍记得，周末父母带着年幼的我来到白燕街，穿行于郁郁葱葱的绿植之间，耳边不时传来清脆的鸟鸣，仿佛置身小小雨林。色彩斑斓的热带鱼缸墙总是让孩子们驻足流连——再宏伟的水族馆，也比不上在父母陪伴下静静观赏的那份亲爱。偶尔有几次机会亲手挑选金鱼，看它们在盆中游动，橙黄橘红，黑斑杂色、大头凸眼……用网捞起，装入盛水并注氧的透明袋中，抱着冰冰凉凉，再买上饲料与水草，情绪价值极大满足。记得一次途中突遇大雨，店主热情邀我们进店避雨，待雨势稍小，我们才蹚水而归。
2025年，白燕街完成改造并更名为“白燕印记步行街”，街道拓宽整缮，面貌焕然一新。有人曾担心改造会让那份熟悉的生活气息与人情味消失，但如今看来，街市的热闹与温情依然延续。在我心中，它始终是那条白燕街。
Baiyan Street (白燕街)
Baiyan Street, generally spanning the area of Hongmian Road (红棉路) and Baiyan Third Street (白燕三街), is a distinctive neighborhood in Foshan filled with the atmosphere of everyday local life. In 1996, to alleviate employment pressure on laid-off workers—particularly after the closure of the former Guangdong Hongmian Silk Factory—and to encourage low-income groups to start their own businesses, relevant authorities established a temporary flower, bird, fish, and insect market on Hongmian Road. As the site was once home to a white swallow breeding farm under the foreign trade bureau, it was named "Baiyan Flower, Bird, Fish, and Insect Pedestrian Street (白燕花鸟鱼虫步行街)," symbolizing auspiciousness and beauty. Locals affectionately refer to it as "Baiyan Street."
Along the approximately 200-meter-long Hongmian Road, shops line both sides, mainly selling ornamental birds, goldfish, tropical fish, aquariums, greenery, potted plants, cats, dogs, reptiles, gardening supplies, fishing gear, and related pet products. Interspersed among them are specialty stores offering calligraphy and paintings, jade ware, antiques, tea sets, coins, ceramics, old books, showerheads, faucets, and plumbing tools. The sides of Baiyan Third Street are primarily occupied by shops selling clothing, toys, and snacks. Though compact in scale, the area is remarkably comprehensive in its offerings. With a wide array of goods at affordable prices, it attracts numerous residents who come to browse and shop. The street is lively, filled with the sounds of conversation and bargaining, radiating a simple, warm sense of community and the pleasures of daily life.
For many people in Foshan, Baiyan Street holds countless joyful memories. From those born in the 1980s to the 2000s and even the 2010s, many have spent happy childhood moments here. I still remember weekends when my parents would bring young me to Baiyan Street. Walking among lush greenery, with the clear chirping of birds occasionally reaching my ears, it felt like being in a miniature rainforest. The vibrant walls of tropical fish tanks always captivated children—no grand aquarium could compare to the warmth of quietly admiring them alongside my parents. On the rare occasions I had the chance to pick out goldfish myself, watching them swim in the basins—orange, yellow, red, black-spotted, multi-colored, big-headed, or bulging-eyed… scooping them up with a net, placing them into a transparent bag filled with water and oxygen, holding the cool bundle, then buying food and aquatic plants—the emotional fulfillment was immense. I recall once when a sudden heavy rain caught us midway, and a shop owner kindly invited us inside to take shelter. We only made our way back, wading through the water, once the rain had lightened.
In 2025, Baiyan Street underwent renovation and was renamed "Baiyan Imprint Pedestrian Street (白燕印记步行街)." The street was widened and refurbished, giving it a fresh, new appearance. Some worried that the renovation might erase the familiar ambiance and human touch, but as it appears now, the liveliness and warmth of the street continue to endure. In my heart, it will always be that same Baiyan Street.
