In my memory, wandering through Baiyan Street(白燕街)encompasses not only the stretch from Hongmian Lu (红棉路)to the area in front of Baiyan Park(白燕公园) but also the north-south oriented Baiyan Third Street(白燕三街) that connects Qinren Lu(亲仁路) and Renminxi Lu(人民西路). From the old Baiyan Market (白燕市场)all the way to Renmin West Road, this section once gathered many vendors, with rows of simple stalls extending from the east side of Baiyan Market to Renminxi Road. Most sold daily necessities like shirts, pants and socks, pillows, and quilts; on the side closer to the residential buildings, there were several shoe stores, clothing shops, toy stores, biscuit and candy shops, and snack stalls, making it a lively scene.
Many of the short-sleeved shirts I wore as a child came from here. I remember facing the dazzling array of children's shoe styles in the shops, trying on different sizes for an entire afternoon until the feeling of selecting and trying them on became almost numb. Several toy stores here also held much joy from my childhood. I especially recall a middle-aged man who often set up a stall at the staircase entrance closest to GZ on weekends, specializing in factory toy samples or slightly flawed items—a chaotic variety sold for just five, ten, or twenty yuan each (I wonder if you might still come across him). At another residential building’s staircase entrance, amid the steamy haze, I tasted xiaolongbao for the first time in my life.
On this street, many babies were born at the nearby Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital(佛山市妇幼保健院), and countless childhoods quietly unfolded here. Before the commercial building “Tongxin Hui”(同心荟) was constructed, that corner used to house a gold shop, with several maternal and infant product shops next to it. Around the hospital, there were always many mobile snack stalls selling treats like baked sweet potatoes, filling the air with a vibrant, everyday atmosphere. Today, the stalls along this road have long been cleared away, and the area is not as bustling as it once was. Yet, that lively scene still often resurfaces in my memories.
