π¬π§ Sandstone is primarily formed through the decomposition of rocks rich in silica and the long-term sorting of grains, during which the unstable material, especially the softer parts, was eroded and the finer particles were washed away. Silicic sandstones are typically found in places where there has been prolonged abrasion and sorting of grains, such as in sediments on beaches (including those at large lakes) or in desert environments (sandstones formed by the compaction of eolian sands).
The color of sandstones usually depends on the nature of the binding material that connects the quartz grains. The presence of CaCO3 or kaolin imparts a whitish hue to the sandstones, those containing Fe2O3 have a reddish color, the presence of iron hydroxide gives them a brown or rusty yellow color, and the presence of glauconite creates a greenish tint. For example, clayey sandstones are less resistant to weathering, while sandstones with a siliceous binder are durable and resistant to erosion.
Sandstone can be red or orange in places and is predominantly fine-grained. It contains over 90% silica, while other minerals like feldspar, mica, or heavy minerals are only minor to rare components. The matrix is a mixture of kaolinite, illite, and silicon dust. The deposition of sandstones is gently inclined to horizontal, and the stratification varies from tabular to bedded, with relatively sparse and usually regular fractures.

It usually appears as a trace from dragging material along the bottom, a current mark, a trace of sediment indentation, ripple marks, and similar features. The opposite of abioglyphs are bioglyphs, which form as a result of organism activity.
Mechanoglyphs most commonly form by the deposition of sand on the uneven surface of underlying clays; examples include erosional grooves, traces from rolling and movement of sediment in a current, and so on.
Diaclasts form after sediment deposition and include traces of settling, indentation, or uneven compaction.
