Geocache Description:

📍 Location: La Malbaie – The Jetty, St. Lawrence River Shoreline

🎯 Purpose of this EarthCache

Understand how the geology of the seabed, the shape of the bay, and tidal dynamics create a nutrient‑rich environment that is favorable to marine mammals of the St. Lawrence.

This EarthCache focuses on geology, not on observing animals.

đŸžïž Geological Context of the Site

1ïžâƒŁ A Submerged Glacial Valley

La Malbaie is an ancient valley carved by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. When the ice melted, the Goldthwait Sea flooded the region, depositing:

  • glaciomarine clays

  • silts

  • reworked sands

  • pebbles from moraines

As the sea gradually retreated, it left behind a bowl‑shaped underwater relief, with deep waters close to the shoreline.

2ïžâƒŁ Bathymetry That Creates a “Nutrient Trap”

The bay features:

  • deep water reached very quickly

  • a funnel‑shaped form

  • steep underwater slopes

This configuration promotes:

  • the upwelling of cold, nutrient‑rich waters

  • the concentration of plankton

  • increased biological productivity

3ïžâƒŁ Tides + Underwater Relief = Ideal Feeding Zone

The St. Lawrence tides interact with the underwater topography, creating:

  • accelerated currents

  • turbulence

  • mixing zones

  • sediment redistribution

These geological processes explain why marine mammals frequent the region 🐋

🧭 What You Must Do to Log This EarthCache

Go to the posted coordinates and answer the following questions. Send your answers via private message or the messaging system.

📝 Questions

🌐 Shape of the Bay and Bathymetry

1.0 Describe the general shape of the bay (open, bowl‑shaped, funnel‑shaped). Explain how this shape may influence the depth of the seabed near the shoreline.

🌊 Tides – Underwater Relief Interaction

2.0 Observe the behavior of the waves or current: do you notice acceleration, a change in direction, or a turbulent zone as the water enters the bay? Explain how the interaction between tides and the underwater relief can create mixing zones or redistribute sediments.

🐋 Geological Conditions Favorable to Large Marine Mammals

3.0 Based solely on the geological characteristics described in this EarthCache (funnel shape, rapid depth increase, tidal currents, mixing zones), explain why this type of environment can favor the presence of large marine mammals in the region.
