Katherine Ordway Preserve Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

CTReviewer: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,
CTReviewer

Geocache Description:

NOTE: The coordinates above are NOT the cache, but the sign of an arboretum that provides the proper coordinates according to the template below.

PLEASE: Read below BEFORE undertaking this cache, which is kid friendly (dogs are not allowed). I'd encourage parents to use this opportunity to share about the benefits of trees, general ecology and tree-related products.

The preserve is located at 165 Goodhill Road, Weston, CT. (Take Rt. 15, exit 42, north on Rt. 57 for 1.7 miles, right onto Goodhill Rd. [at light at bottom of hill]. Keep straight at the stop, 3rd driveway on right.) Please register your visit at the parking lot, you'll find maps and info in the box below.

Philanthropist Katherine Ordway (1899-1979) lived on this property and preserved the land (was involved in preserving Devil's Den, prairie lands out west and other lands throughout the country.) I found out today that my parents had met her, she showed up to the first Garden Club meeting my Mom ran, and at another point invited my folks to her place.

But anyway, none of that matters to you, the one who wants to find the cache. However, trees matter: to our species, to the world, and to find this cache.

At the above coordinates, you will find a map display identifying and numbering the trees in the arboretum.

The coordinates template is N41 12.ABC W073 21.DE (substitute the letters with the numbers of the appropriate trees--coordinates were averaged from multiple readings)

A = the tree in the farthest lower-left of the display and the only one to your left as you face the signage (also erroneously marketed for memory improvement here, revered for longevity and fertility in Japan)
B = Chinese Chestnut (Yum, roasted chestnuts...); second to right of red "you are here" arrow
C = Norway Maple (above #6)
D = one of my favorite trees, from which we get syrup (also farthest lower-right tree number in display)
E = Native American's used this tree's bark for canoes (also good tinder and are rather picturesque); below #11, right of #21

(Since the sheet at the arboretum deteriorated, I've provided alternate info from the display...)

If you don't know what trees the clues refer to, please research beforehand! (You can't figure it out there...)

It's about a 1/4 mile to the arboretum depending on approach, ~1/4 mile from there to the cache depending on approach, and just over that back to the lot (taking you through a variety of trails and typical New England terrain). You're likely to see deer, wild turkey and a variety of birds (saw a Yellow-Shafted Flicker and Pileated Woodpecker as I placed the cache).
