Geocache Description:

The true name for this area is in the hint, but this is one of the best viewpoints in all of San Diego. It was once called Lookout Mountain. This was because the early settlers would go up it to see if the steamships had come into San Diego Harbor. In those days it took a full day to get to the bay from here. An encyclopedia company bought the land and named it Encyclopedia Hill, but because the people had trouble with the spelling it was changed to its present name. The encyclopedia people would g ive away a 10 foot lot if you purchased a set of their encyclopedias at a cost of $109 dollars. A dear price in the late 1800's and early 1900's. During World War II there was an artillary gun emplacement here to protect the nearby dam because they fear ed the Japanese might bomb it. For more information about this place and the area visit the Bancroft Museum in Spring Valley. The cache is a large plastic container. It's filled with lots of goodies. Watch out for snakes in the warm weather.
Best parking is at N32° 43.781 X W116° 59.606. Off road vehicles can make it from this location, but all others should go by foot..
