In 1778, Squire Boone, Daniel Boones brother, and John McKinney discovered the stream that now bears the name Doe Run. Boone claimed title to a tract of land, including the head of Doe Run Creek in 1786. The deed was signed by Patrick Henry, then Governor of Virginia.
The community was first called Little York Virginia.
At the time Meade County was established, and county officials appointed, legal business was transacted at the little community called Little York, in the Doe Run section of the county.
About the year 1800 a large stone building was erected on Doe Run Creek and used as a mill for about a century following. Thomas Lincoln, who would be the father of President Abraham Lincoln, was at that date a young stone mason living at Elizabethtown KY, and is said to have worked on the Doe Run mill building, which today is likely the oldest building in the county. It was first used as a woolen mill, then as a gristmill, later it became a flour and grain mill.
Today it is known as the Doe Run Inn, catering to overnight guests and serving “Southern-style food.” Many valuable pieces of old furniture are on display. Please take a little time to wander the area it is a nice place to hear yourself think.
Today, Doe Run Inn offers peace and quiet in an “away from the city” atmosphere. Please remember this when you are hunting this cache.
